Florida State redshirt freshman quarterback EJ Manuel has earned Atlantic Coast Conference Rookie of the Week honors after leading the Seminoles to a 41-28 victory at Wake Forest in his first career start.
Manuel, who replaced injured ACC total offense and passing leader Christian Ponder, directed the Seminoles to three touchdowns and a field goal in the Seminoles’ first four possessions, including his own 1-yard touchdown run.
The Virginia Beach native completed 15 of 20 passes for 220 yards, including one touchdown – a 7-yard scoring strike to Jarmon Fortson in the fourth quarter – which gave the Seminoles a 19-point lead. Manuel also rushed for 45 yards on 10 carries as Florida State moved within a victory of extending its nation-leading streak of consecutive bowl appearances to 28.
Manuel is the first Florida State player to earn Rookie of the Week honors this season. His victory is the 15th in the last 16 games for first-time starting quarterbacks at FSU.
