St. Petersburg, Fla. – Florida State junior right-hander Marc LaMacchia pitched six no-hit innings as he led the second-ranked Seminoles (2-0) to a 5-1 win over VMI (0-2) in front of 1,337 fans at Florida Power Park. LaMacchia tied a career-high with eight strikeouts and walked just two. Senior closer Daniel Hodges recorded the final two outs of the game with two runners on to pick up his first save of the season.
After VMI got on the board first with an unearned run in the top of the sixth, the Seminoles answered back with three runs in the bottom half of the inning. Bryan Zech led off with a double and came around to score on Tony McQuade’s RBI-single to right. Jerrod Brown knocked in the second run with a single and Blake Balkcom drew a bases loaded walk to make it 3-1.
The Seminoles added two insurance runs in the seventh. Zech singled and McQuade walked before a double steal put runners on second and third. Zech scored on Eddy Martinez-Esteve’s groundout and McQuade stole third and home to push the lead to 5-1.
Zech went 2-for-3 with two runs scored to lead the Seminoles offensively. McQuade also scored two runs and his three stolen bases were a career-high.
VMI starter Phil Hendrix took the loss after giving up three runs (one earned) on four hits over 5.2 innings. Hendrix struck out three and walked one.
The third and final game of the series is scheduled for 1:30 p.m. on Sunday. Left-hander Trent Peterson will start on the mound for Florida State.
