Maryland Eliminates North Carolina From The 2003 ACC Softball Championship

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – Maryland second baseman Nneka Cardoza singled up the middle in the bottom of the eighth inning to score Samantha Sweeney and also keep the Terrapins alive in game 4 of the 2003 Atlantic Coast Conference Softball Championship being played at the Seminole Softball Complex.


Virginia will face Maryland at 5:00 pm this afternoon. North Carolina was eliminated from the championship and falls to 39-20-1.


North Carolina started the game off with a bang as they scored 4 runs in the top half of the first inning. Megan Welch singled to left field and was brought home on a homerun by Quinn Porter. Porter now has 6 homeruns on the season. The Tar Heels scored two more runs in the first inning as Jaclyn Holden and Emily Price scored on Michelle Hoffman’s fielder’s choice.


Carolina struck again in the top of the second as Tiffany Tolleson led off the inning by reaching on an error. She stole second and later scored on a two out double by Holden.


Maryland notched six runs on the scoreboard to take the 6-5 lead in the bottom of the second inning. Monica Cyphert led off the inning with a walk and was followed by Casey Leiter who singled to right center. Crystal Rizzuto doubled to score Cyphert and Leiter. After Natalie Grossman walked, Samantha Sweeney hit her second homerun of the season to score Grossman and Rizzuto.


In the top of the fourth inning, North Carolina rallied back to take the 7-6 lead over the Terrapins. Welch singled and was brought around to score on a double off the bat of Porter. Holden brought Porter home on her triple down the right field line.


The Terrapins took back the lead in the bottom of the fourth as Cyphert doubled to left scoring Cardoza who led off the inning with a walk. Leiter followed with a single scoring Cyphert and giving Maryland the 8-7 lead.


North Carolina’s Dionne Street tied the game at 8 apiece when she drove the ball over the centerfield fence in the top of the seventh inning.


This was the 5th (3-2) extra-inning game for the Terrapins who improve to 27-17 on the season.
