Tallahassee, Fla. – Sophomore Matt Fairel was named ACC Co-Pitcher of the Week for the first time in his career as he led third-ranked Florida State to a victory over No. 11 Georgia Tech last Saturday. Fairel shares this week’s honor with Pat McAnaney of Virginia.
Fairel earned his fourth straight victory of the season as he registered eight innings and nine strikeouts, both career-highs, in an 11-2 win over Georgia Tech. The sophomore southpaw faced the minimum through 3.2 innings and at one point retired nine straight batters before the Yellow Jackets recorded their first hit against him in the top of the fourth. Eight of the nine strikeouts posted by Fairel came in the final four innings as he finished the night striking out the side in the eighth. His streak of 14.1 consecutive scoreless innings came to an end in the fifth when the Jackets scored their lone run off Fairel.
In his first year as a starter, the Winter Haven, Fla., native is 4-0 on the year with a 1.00 ERA. He has worked a team-high 27 innings and is holding opponents to a .219 average. Fairel has accumulated 26 strikeouts and just eight walks so far this season. He has not allowed more than two runs in any of his four starts this year.
Fairel and the Seminoles are back in action this week with four straight road games. Florida State will take on intra-state rival Florida on Tuesday, March 18 at 6:30 pm in Gainesville before taking off on the first ACC road trip of the season. The Seminoles travel to Blacksburg, Va., for a three-game set against the Virginia Tech Hokies beginning Friday, March 21.
