Tallahassee, Fla. — Florida State senior left-hander Matt Lynch and sophomore catcher Aaron Cheesman have been named to the 2003 Verizon Academic All-America All-District III Baseball Second Team. Lynch carries a 3.23 GPA in Risk Management & Real Estate while Cheesman has a 3.65 ERA in Finance & Real Estate. In addition to their work in the classroom, they have helped the Seminoles to a No. 1 national ranking and a record of 44-8-1.
Lynch, a native of Ft. Pierce, Fla., leads Florida State with 10 wins on the season. He has a career record of 39-7, which ranks fourth in ACC history in career victories. Lynch was drafted in the seventh round last summer following his junior season by the San Diego Padres, but turned down a substantial offer to complete his degree at FSU.
Cheesman has seen time both at catcher and designated hitter this year for the top-ranked Seminoles. He is hitting .286 with six doubles, one home run, 20 runs scored and 16 RBI. Cheesman is seventh on the team with an on-base percentage of .412.
Florida State wraps up the regular season this week at Duke with a three-game series, beginning on Thursday.
