McCarty Claims Weekly Honors

Oct. 20, 2009

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – For the second time this year, Florida State’s Tiffany McCarty was honored by the Atlantic Coast Conference as the league’s Co-Player of the Week. McCarty shares the weekly accolade with Duke’s Elisabeth Redmond.

McCarty had a hand in four of the five goals scored in fifth-ranked FSU’s 5-1 road victory over Clemson last Thursday. She set a career-high for points (6), while tying career-highs for goals (2) and assists (2). The two-goal performance marked her third of the season and sixth of her career.

The Laurel, Md., native gave the Seminoles an early lead by scoring the game’s first goal just three minutes and 31 seconds in, finding the back of the net on a chip from 12 yards out after a move inside the box that beat the Tiger goalkeeper. She provided the game-winning assist on a goal scored by Jessica Price in the 48th minute to give FSU a 2-0 lead. McCarty helped put the game away with another assist on a goal by Price in the 61st minute, followed by her second goal of the game in the 70th minute.

McCarty becomes the fourth Seminole in school history to be recognized twice in a single-season as the ACC Player of the Week joining Cindy Schofield (2001), Selin Kuralay (2005) and Sanna Talonen (2008).

The sophomore forward, who was also named to the Top Drawer Soccer National Teams of the Week, finished the game with three shots as all three shots were fired on goal.

With just two weeks remaining in the regular season, McCarty currently leads the ACC in points (30) and goals (12) and is tied for fourth in assists with six. McCarty and fellow teammate Jessica Price are the only two student-athletes in the ACC to rank in the top five in points, goals and assists.

As a two-time ACC Player of the Week honoree, McCarty (September 29 & October 20) joins fellow teammates Toni Pressley (September 22) and Jessica Price (September 8) as recipients of ACC Player of the Week honors in 2009.

McCarty and the Seminoles return to action this Thursday, October 22 at 6:00 p.m. as FSU hosts No. 3 North Carolina. The Seminoles are looking to `Black Out’ the Soccer Complex on Thursday as the first 1,000 fans in attendance will receive a black t-shirt courtesy of Hungry Howie’s. The game will also air live on FS Florida.
