McColumn Runs First Qualifying Time of the Season For FSU Track

Tallahassee, Fla. – The Florida State track and field team wrapped up day one (March 3, 2006) of the 2006 Snowbird Invitational meet at the Mike Long Track and Field Complex in Tallahassee, Fla.

Senior hurdler LaKendra McColumn (Lithonia, Ga./Southwest Dekalb) became the first Seminole to post an NCAA East Regional qualifying mark, running a 1:00.16 in the 400m hurdles to better the standard of 1:00.82.

Junior Charlene Walker (Orlando, Fla./Edgewater) finished second in the long jump with a mark of 18’7.75″ (5.68m).

Junior Lindsey Nelson (Jacksonville, Fla./Mandarin) won the discus with a mark of 148’11” (45.39m). Fellow thrower Sarah Reed (Punta Gorda, FL//Illinois) won the hammer throw, tossing a distance of 164’7″ (50.17m). Senior Kate Purcell (West Point, PA/Southern Illinois-Edwardsville) rounded out the field event victories, taking the top spot in the javelin with a season-opening throw of 127’11” (39.00m).

Redshirt sophomore Luke Beevor (Luton, England/Icknield) won the 5000m in 14:18.07.

Newcomer Tywayne Buchanan (Greater Portmore, Jamaica/Wolmer’s Boys’ School) won the 400m hurdles with a time of 53.09, just ahead of redshirt freshman Javier Garcia-Tunon (Miami, Fla./Belen Jesuit), who clocked in at 53.43 for second place.

The Seminoles return to action at 10:30 am with the hammer throw and 11:00 am with the 4x100m relay on the track.
