TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – The Florida State men’s team will face the Nittany Lions of Penn State Wednesday, March 6th at 3:30 p.m. Also in a midweek match, the Lady Seminoles tennis team will take on the Michigan State Spartans on Thursday, March 7th at 2:00 p.m. Both matches will be played at the Scott Speicher Tennis Center on the campus of Florida State University.
The Lady Seminoles enter the contest with a 7-6 record and are ranked 41st in the Omni Hotels Collegiate Tennis Rankings. The Spartans come to Tallahassee with a 6-4 record and are tied for 75th in the rankings. The Seminoles faced the Spartans for the first time last season and won that match 7-0. The Lady Seminoles feature two players ranked in the individual rankings and one doubles team is ranked. The ranked Seminoles are No. 42 Anca Dumitrescu and No. 138 Christina Denny. The tandem of Dumitrescu and senior Alida Gallovits is ranked 41st.
This weekend, the Lady Seminoles will play host to in-state foes Florida International on Saturday and South Florida on Sunday.
The Florida State men’s tennis team first met Penn State in 2001. The Nittany Lions won that in a close 4-3 decision. This season, the Florida State men’s team will face an unranked Penn State team, which has a record of 3-5 on the season. The 42nd ranked Seminoles enter the match with a 7-3 record. The Seminoles will look to defend their home court as they have only lost one match at home this season. The Seminoles feature 53rd ranked Xavier Luscan, a senior, who is 16-8 in singles play this year. Freshman Mat Cloer also enters the match ranked in the individual rankings at no. 131.
After the midweek contests the men will travel to Charlottesville, Va. to open their conference season against the Cavaliers of Virginia.
