TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (Seminoles.com) – Two weeks before the 2017-18 season begins, the Florida State Men’s Golf team was selected 20th in the Preseason Bushnell Golfweek Coaches Poll, announced Friday by the Golf Coaches Association of America.
Bolstered by the return of redshirt senior Harry Ellis, the Seminoles return a nine-member roster that includes two talented freshmen in John Pak (Scotch Plains, N.J.) and Parker Reddig (Minneapolis, Minn.). Ellis is coming off an All-America season where he recorded career bests in scoring average (71.62), average vs. par (+0.54) and rounds played (39).
The Seminoles were one of five ACC teams in the Top 25 poll, joining Wake Forest (11), Virginia (15), Clemson (17) and Georgia Tech (18). Duke was just outside the Top 25 at 26th.
Getting a boost from what is an improving sophomore class could be a huge lift for the Seminoles this upcoming season. The four-member class that includes Jonathan Keppler, Greyson Porter, Jamie Li and Jake Carter all showed flashes of brilliance last year. With a whole offseason to raise their game, each figures to compete for starting five spots in the fall.
Juniors Bennett Baker and Corey Carlson are also key returnees for Florida State, with Baker recording two Top-10 finishes last year while Carlson tied for third at the Southern Intercollegiate.
Florida State’s first tournament of the year takes place Sept. 9-10 at the Doc Gimmler Invitational on the Bethpage Red Course in Farmingdale, N.Y.
