Men’s Golf Team Finishes In Eighth Place At Shoal Creek Intercollegiate

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. –
Florida State junior Torstein Naevestad finished in a tie for 14th place in the individual standings the Seminoles finished in eighth place in the team standings as play in the Inaugural Shoal Creek Intercollegiate at Shoal Creek Golf Club concluded Tuesday. The Seminoles had moved into a tie for fifth place in the team standings when the second of three rounds was completed during the morning but slipped into their final position of eighth in the final round.

First round leader Louisiana State came back after falling behind SEC rival Tennessee after the second round to nip the Volunteers by a single stroke to win team championship. The Tigers’ team score of 863 was one-under for the 54-hole tournament on the par-72, 7,114-yard Shoal Creek Country Club course. The host UAB Blazers, who vaulted from an eighth place tie after one round to fourth after two, finished third in the team standings. East Tennessee State’s Rhys Davies and Tennessee’s Jonathan Mount were declared co-champions after playing even on a four-hole playoff. Notre Dame’s Cole Isban (69-69-72) was knocked out on the first playoff hole. Davies scores were 72-70-68 and Mount carded rounds of 70-69-71. The trio finished the 54-hole tournament at six-under par, 210.

Torstein (Oslo, Norway) earned the 10th top-15 finish of his collegiate career as he finished the event with a two-over par 218 total. He played his best golf of the tournament as he carded a two-under par 70 in the second round to help the Seminoles move from a tie for eighth place after the first round into a tie for fifth place after 36 holes.

Sophomore Song Jeon (Seoul, South Korea) finished in a tie for 25th place as he played the final two rounds of the event at one-under par. He shot a career-low tying 69 in the second round and a 74 in the final round to finish with a four-over par total of 220. Jeon has now earned four top-25 finishes during his career as a Seminole.

Sophomore Jonas Blixt (Hammaro, Sweden) played well for Florida State along with freshmen Matt Savage (Louisville, Ky.) and Nicholas Smith (Belleview, Fla.). Blixt carded a one0under par 71 in the round while Savage carded an identical one-under par 71 in the second round. Smith played his best golf of the event in the third round as he finished with a 74.

Florida State continues its fall schedule at the Gary Koch Intercollegiate in Tampa Oct. 10-11.
