TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (seminoles.com) –
The No.18 Florida State men’s golf team travels south to participate in their second tournament for the spring season in the USF Invitational. The tournament will be held at the par 72 Lake Jovita Golf and Country Club in Dade City, Fla., March 4-6, 2012. The event is played over three days with 18 holes played each day. Florida State played in the USF Invitational during the spring of 2011 and finished in as the runner-up in the team standings.
THE 2012 USF INVITATIONAL FIELD
Florida State is joined by No. 17 UCF, No. 24 Georgia, Arkansas State, Cincinnati, DePaul, Eastern Michigan, Florida Atlantic, Louisville, Kentucky, North Carolina, Marquette, Middle Tennessee State, Villanova, Troy and Florida Golf in the 2012 USF Invitational. Florida State enters the event looking to win the team championship after finishing second behind Middle Tennessee last season.
SEIFFERT LEADS HIS FIRST TOURNAMENT AS A SEMINOLE
Seminole junior Chase Seiffert finished in a tie for third place in the individual standings (and as the Seminoles’ team leader) as he competed for the first time in the garnet and gold colors. Seiffert earned scores of 68-71-74 for a three over par and a total of 213. Seiffert’s tied for third place individual finish is the second best for by a Seminole this year behind only Brooks Koepka’s individual championship at the Brickyard Collegiate Championship during the fall season.
SOLID SPRING SEASON OPENING FOR THE SEMINOLES
Florida State finished in fifth place in the team standings in the spring-season opening Gator Invitational at the Mark Bostick Golf Course at the University of Florida. The Seminoles finished with a team score of 873 (+33), which marked their second best single round team scored of the 2011-12 season. Sophomore Joaquin Lolas (Lima, Peru) had a solid finish as he carded a team-best 72 in the third round. He finished in a tie for 14th place in the individual standings. His three round total of 217 ranks as his third best of his career while his individual finish is also the third best of his career.
GREAT SUCCESS AT THE USF INVITATIONAL
Florida State enters the 2012 USF with a mindset of winning the tournament after finishing second last year with a team score of 857 (-7). The Seminoles came up just short and just behind Middle Tennessee State, who returns to defend its title. Florida State had two top five individual finishes as the tournament a year ago as then senior Drew Kittleson finished in third place while senior Brooks Kopeka finished in fourth place in the individual standings.
EW STAFF MEMBERS NAMED TO GOLF STAFF
Director of Golf and Head Men’s Golf Coach Trey Jones has added two new professionals to the Seminole staff: Robert Duck as an assistant coach and Chad Smith as the Golf Operations Manager. Duck comes to Florida State from The Hambric Sports Group where he had work as a player manger since 2003. He has been a top amateur player in his native England and earned All-American honors at Augusta State where he played from 1998-2001. Duke led the Jaguars to three NCAA Championship appearances and was the interim head coach at his alma mater in 2003. Smith, who graduated from Florida State in 2005, will oversee operations for the men’s and women’s teams and coach staff, manages all business administration and coordinates team travel. He is also the assistant director of the Seminole Intercollegiate Men’s Golf Tournament.
