Oct. 13, 2012

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. –The No. 20 Florida State men’s golf team finished off the fall season at the Cabo Collegiate at the Querencia Golf Club in Cabo San Lucas, Baja California Mexico this Sunday. The team tees off Sunday at 9 a.m. as the highest ranked team in the tournament. The tournament will be played over three days and is 54 holes. The course is 7,070 yards and a par 72.

“We said at the first team meeting of the year that this Cabo trip was going to be a reward for all of the guys who were doing best in school,” said head coach Trey Jones. “We did extensive grade reports and this is our best five guys academically. We’re not saying our other guys are doing poorly, but these ones earned it in the classroom and this is their reward.”

The Seminoles are traveling senior Doug Letson (Tampa, Fla.), sophomore Daniel Berger (Jupiter, Fla.) and freshmen Rowin Caron (Terheijden, Netherlands), Collin Engelhardt (Orlando, Fla.) and Hank Lebioda (Winter Springs, Fla.).

Berger is coming off his best finish at Florida State after finishing tied for second at the Olympia Fields/Illini Invitational two weeks ago. Letson is playing in his third tournament of the fall and placed 20th at the Inverness Intercollegiate.

“We’re looking for each guy to improve,” continued Jones. “After the tournament we can break down what we need to do so we can be ready to play again in February. Three of the guys happen to be freshmen, they’re good golfers or they wouldn’t be out there.”

Caron is playing in only his second tournament of the fall after playing at the PING/Golfweek Preview in September. In his third tournament in Engelhardt he carded the second best score on the team at the Inverness Intercollegiate. Lebioda had his best tournament at the Olympia Fields/Illini Invitational where he finished in a tie for 17th.

The Seminoles are part of a 12-team field that includes four teams in the top 50. Florida State joins No. 25 St. Mary’s, No. 32 Kentucky, No. 47 Mississippi, Texas-Arlington, USF, host school Santa Clara, Loyola Marymount, Arkansas-Little Rock, South Dakota, Cincinnati and Abilene Christian.
