TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (AP) – Michael Joiner scored 21 points and Delvon
Arrington added 16 Tuesday as Florida State defeated Birmingham-Southern 78-62.
One of Joiner’s three 3-point goals ignited a 13-2 start in the second half
as the Seminoles (3-2) opened a 45-27 lead. Their largest lead came at 55-33
with 11:54 left on a 3-point shot by Arrington.
Joiner hit 7 of 10 shots from the field, missing just once from 3-point
range. Florida State’s 340-pound center, Nigel Dixon, added 10 points and a
game-high eight rebounds.
Neither team shot well during the game, particularly in the first half when
both teams shot an identical 36.4 percent as Florida State built a 32-25 lead.
Rashard Willie led the Panthers (1-5) with 23 points and T.R. Reed added 22.
No other player scored more than six points for Birmingham-Southern.
Florida State fans also got a brief look at last year’s Mr. Basketball in
Florida when Adrian McPherson got in the game during the final minute. He did
not shoot. McPherson, the football team’s backup quarterback, began practicing
with the basketball team Monday.
