TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – The Florida State men’s tennis team won all nine matches Wednesday afternoon to take the match over the Penn State Nittany Lions, 7-0. The Seminoles’ record improves to 8-3 on the season, while the Penn State falls to 4-6. The Seminoles increase the all-time series record to 2-0 over the Nittany Lions.
The Seminoles took all three doubles matches to enter singles play with a one-point advantage. At no. 3 doubles, sophomore Romain Jurd and Gustav Bucht defeated Clint Keithley and Roddy Cantey of Penn State, 8-5. Also in an 8-5 victory, freshman Mat Cloer and sophomore Alex Herrera defeated Brad Nudell and Matt Frakes at the no. 2 doubles position. Finishing the doubles sweep, the ACC Indoor Champions senior Xavier Luscan and junior Rodrigo Laub defeated Todd Stecko and Jamie Gresh 8-6.
In singles play, Luscan easily defeated Gresh 6-1, 6-3 at the no. 1 position. After being down 3-0 in the first set, Jurd, a sophomore, won the next twelve games to take the no. 2 singles match over Stecko, 6-3, 6-0. Freshman Chip Webb extended his singles record to 8-2 with a win over Frakes 6-3, 6-2. Jarrod Owen also won in straight sets for the Seminoles.
Also in singles, Herrera and Cloer overcame 7-5 losses in the second set to take their matches. At no. 3 singles, Cloer defeated Brad Nudell 6-2, 5-7, 6-1. Herrera defeated Roddy Cantey 7-5, 4-6, 6-4 at the no. 5 position.
The Seminoles open ACC action on Saturday March 9th when they travel to Charlottesville, Va. to take on the Virginia Cavaliers.
