Men’s Tennis Completes First Day of Play at Sherwood Cup

THOUSAND OAKS, Calif. – The Florida State men’s tennis team went 1-3 in singles action during the first day of play at the Sherwood Cup in Thousand Oaks, Calif. The 11th-ranked Seminoles sent senior Chris Westerhof, junior Ytai Abougzir and freshman Chris Cloer to represent FSU at the tournament that continues through the weekend.

In the first round, Cloer defeated Oliver Hyams of Pepperdine, 6-0, 6-3. Abougzir, ranked No. 72 in the country, fell to UCLA’s Chris Surapol (7-6, 6-3) and Westerhof dropped a 6-4, 7-5 match to Andre Bergmann of Pepperdine.

In the second round, Matija Zgaga of Baylor overcame Cloer 7-6, 6-3.

Head Coach Dwayne Hultquist sent the trio in order to get more practice for the upcoming dual season. Florida State opens the 2006 campaign next Saturday.

Chris Cloer defeated Oliver Hyams Pepperdine 6-0,6-3

Chris Surapol UCLA defeated Ytai Abougzir 7-6, 6-3

Andre Bergmann Pepperdine defeated Chris Westerhof 6-4,7-5


Second round

Matija Zgaga Baylor defeated Chris Cloer 7-6,6-3
