Men’s Tennis In Doubleheader Saturday

Feb. 11, 2000

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – The 48th-ranked Florida State Seminoles (3-1)
will continue their non-conference schedule this weekend with a
doubleheader on Saturday. The first match will begin at 10:00 a.m. when
the Seminoles host the Jacksonville Dolphins (2-1). About an hour after
that match the Seminoles will face UNC-Asheville (0-3). The Florida State
men’s tennis team has moved up 21 spots in the ITA rankings over the past
two weeks, from 69th to 48th in the nation.

This past weekend marked a successful home opener for FSU. The
initial match, against Georgia Southern University, resulted in a Seminole
victory by a score of 4-3. The Noles went on to continue their winning
streak against the Golden Knights of Central Florida on Saturday February
5th, winning another tight match 4-3.

Five Seminoles made their debuts at the six-year old Scott Speicher
Tennis Center that weekend. Junior transfer Xavier Luscan represented FSU
in both matches at No. 1 singles and freshmen Joe Bassett and Rodrigo Laub
each played at a match at No. 6 singles. Laub, playing through a stomach
muscle strain, toughed it out to defeat Central Florida’s Ryan Winters in
three sets.

It was a busy weekend for the Florida State men’s tennis athletic
trainer Tim Shea. Not only did Laub have to overcome injuries, but
sophomore Noah Schnell fought through shin splints before and during his
Friday match against Wojciech Nowak from Georgia Southern. In addition,
the No. 3 doubles team of Chad Mooney and Xavier Luscan had a minor pause
in their competition when Mooney suffered a minor abrasion under his left
eye.

Another new facet of the men’s tennis program that made a debut
last weekend was the Golden Ace Girls. In an effort to promote the program
to the community through marketing and public relations, the 12-member
group selected by Coach Hultquist helps the coaching staff throughout the
week prepare for upcoming matches. The Golden Ace Girls also assist the
team on match days helping officials score the matches.

The Seminoles will host Florida Atlantic on Friday, February 18th
at 3:30 p.m. in their next home match.
