TALLAHASSEE, Fla. –
Led by No. 26th-ranked Xavier Luscan, the
Florida State men’s tennis team will play in their first tournament of the
season this weekend at the Southern Collegiate Championships in Athens
Georgia. Hosted by the University of Georgia and consisting of 33 schools
from around the Southeast, the Southern Collegiate begins on Friday, Sept.
29th and concludes on Monday, October 2nd.
Luscan and Romain Jurd will compete in the Division I bracket.
Luscan is seeded fourth in the upper half of the Division I draw while Jurd
is seeded sixth in the lower half of the Division I draw. Both players
will receive a bye for their first round match and will be playing second
round matches Friday afternoon. FSU also entered two players in the
Division II singles in Chad Mooney and Alex Herrera. Mooney will play his
first match Friday morning, while Herrera will receive a bye in the first
round and will play Friday afternoon. In the Division III singles draw,
FSU entered Rodrigo Laub, Jeff Scarella and Jared Owen. Owen and Laub will
both play their first match early Friday morning, while Scarella received a
bye and will play later that afternoon. Representing FSU in the Division
IV singles draw will be Elliot Elias and Joe Bassett who will both play
their first matches early Friday morning.
“This is definitely one of the best tournaments in the fall as far
as strength and competition,” FSU Head Coach Dwayne Hultquist said. “This
will be a great opportunity for us to get some matches in and see where we
stand among other teams. We want to make a great showing. It will be a
great way to evaluate where the players are right now and also what we need
to work on.”
Florida State’s next competition will be the Seminole Fall Classic,
October 13-15, at the Scott Speicher Tennis Center.
