TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – The Florida State Men’s tennis team hosted the Seminole Team Tournament Saturday at the Scott Speicher Tennis Center. The Seminoles defeated Tennessee Tech 7-0 to remain unbeaten on the day. Earlier in the day, the Seminoles defeated Jacksonville in a 7-0 decision to advance to the championship game.
“I thought we did a lot of good things today. They were a good team,” head coach Dwayne Hultquist said. “Tomorrow will be a very challenging game for us. Furman is ranked so it will be an exciting match.”
Although several of the matches were close, the Seminoles pulled it out in the end. Jeff Scarella came from behind to beat Piotr Wawrzyniak in straight sets (6-2, 7-5). In another close match, freshman Chip Webb defeated Simon Tremblay 6-3, 4-6 (10-6).
In the first match against Jacksonville, it took only two matches for the Seminoles to win the doubles point. At the no.2 doubles position, senior Gustav Bucht and sophomore Romain Jurd defeated the Dolphin tandem of Rich Davoli and Kamal El Bouzkouri 8-1. A short time later, freshman Chip Webb and senior Jeff Scarella overcame Andres Rojas and Anthony Bugge at the no. 3 spot 8-2. This gave the Seminoles a point advantage heading into singles play. Then, one by one each of the Seminoles won their singles matches.
The second match-up of the day featured Florida A & M and Tennessee Tech. In a close match where every point mattered, the Golden Eagles eventually proved too much for the Rattlers, and took the match 4-3. Later, the Rattlers overcame Jacksonville in the consolation match, 4-3.
The Seminoles match against Furman, Sunday January 27th, will begin at 1 p.m. at the Scott Speicher Tennis Center.
