TEMPE, AZ. — The Florida State men’s tennis team lost a heartbreaker to 41st ranked Arizona State, Friday in Tempe, Arizona. The Seminoles, who had been riding a four-match winning streak, suffered just their fourth loss of the season in a 4-3 decision. The Seminoles record falls to 11-4 on the season. Arizona State moves to 7-4 in dual match play.
At no. 3 doubles, junior Romain Jurd and senior Gustav Bucht defeated Clinton Letcher and Rodney Rapson 8-3. Unfortunately, the Sun Devils took the other two doubles matches to enter singles play with the point advantage.
At no. 2 doubles, Romain Jurd defeated Letcher, who is ranked 111th nationally, 3-6, 6-4, 7-6 (5). Both Florida State freshman Mat Cloer and Chip Webb collected their twelfth wins of the season in the match. Cloer, at no. 3 singles, defeated Mirza Duranovic in straight sets, 7-5, 6-4. Webb fought back from a second set loss take his match at the no. 4 position over Oliver Charroin 6-4, 4-6, 6-2. These three wins were not enough for the Seminoles, as the Sun Devils took the other three singles matches to win the contest.
The Seminoles will take the week off before facing the rival Gators from the University of Florida. That match will be in Gainesville, FL on Saturday, March 23rd at 1 p.m.
