TALLAHASSEE, Fla. -The Florida State men’s tennis team is set to play host to the 27th ranked Tar Heels of the University of North Carolina Saturday at the Scott Speicher Tennis Center. The Tar Heels enter the match with a 12-4 overall record and 3-0 in ACC play. The Seminoles boast a 12-6 record overall and are 4-1 in conference play.
The Tar Heels lead the all-time series 20-5 and the Seminoles have not beaten the Tar Heels since a 4-3 victory in the 1995 season. Although a win over the Heels seems like a daunting task, this could be the Seminoles’ year, as the Seminoles have enjoyed their best conference start since that 1995 season when the team started ACC play with a 5-0 run.
“North Carolina is a great team. They just beat Wake Forest and are tied for first place in the conference standings,” head coach Dwayne Hultquist said. “It will take a great effort on our part, but we are ready for the challenge.”
The Tar Heels boast one player ranked in the singles rankings, along with one ranked doubles team. Junior Marcio Petrone is ranked 53rd in singles and 51st in doubles with teammate Greg Archer. Florida State also has a player and doubles team ranked. In singles, senior Xavier Luscan is ranked at no. 38. The tandem of Luscan and senior Rodrigo Laub are ranked 51st.
After Saturday’s dual with the Tar Heels, the Seminoles will take the week off before heading to Georgia Tech Friday, April 12th. The Seminoles will complete their regular season on Sunday, April 14th against Duke.
