STANFORD, Calif. – After a successful three-year career at Florida State, senior Vahid Mirzadeh (Wellington, Fla.) played in is his last match wearing the Garnet and Gold. Mirzadeh and sophomore Connor Smith (Tampa, Fla.) advanced farther in the Doubles NCAA Tournament then anyone before them by reaching the quarterfinals. In a match that was interrupted twice by weather, the Seminoles lost 6-7(3), 6-4, 6-2.
Florida State’s No. 13 doubles team squared off against Stanford’s Bradley Klahn and Ryan Thacher, the No. 3 team in the nation. In the first set, the teams battled back and forth until tying the set at 6-6. In the tiebreaker, FSU took a quick 3-0 lead to eventually win 7-3.
In the second set, Florida State was serving with the score 1-1 when Stanford broke the `Noles. That was all Stanford needed to do as they went on to win the second set 6-4. In the third set, Florida State was broken early for Stanford to gain that lead and win 6-2.
Yesterday Mirzadeh and Smith became the first Seminoles to earn All-American Doubles honors since 1995 as they defeated last year’s National Champions 6-4, 3-6, 6-1 in the round of 16.
Mirzadeh and Smith finish their season with a 21-10 record in doubles play.
The NCAA tournament is taking place at Stanford University in Stanford, Calif., at the Taube Family Tennis Center. The school has been hosting the team championships since May 19 and it continue through May 30 at the conclusion of singles and doubles finals.
