GREENSBORO, N.C. – The Atlantic Coast Conference announced Tuesday, February 8th that Florida State’s Vahid Mirzadeh and Virginia’s Michael Shabaz have been named the ACC Co-Players of the Week presented by Chevrolet following their victories over highly nationally-ranked opponents.
“It’s a nice honor to have after this tough weekend we had,” said Mirzadeh. “I played a good match with Connor in doubles and followed it up with a tough match in singles.”
The honor is the first of his career for the senior Mirzadeh. The No. 42 Wellington, Fla., native upset the No. 4 player in the nation, Alexandre Lacroix of Florida on court one. After previously falling to Lacroix at the 2009 Wilson/ITA Southeast Championships, Mirzadeh came back to win his sixth straight match 7-5, 2-6, 6-4.
In doubles play, he and sophomore Connor Smith (Tampa, Fla.) clinched the doubles point against the Gators with an 8-5 upset of No. 11 Lacroix and Nassim Slilam. This marked the unranked duo’s third ranked win of the season and are now 9-0.
“Vahid had a great weekend beating the No. 4 singles player and No. 11 doubles team,” said head coach Dwayne Hultquist. “He’s just played well all year. He’s shown a lot of leadership and you know he’s going to give it everything he has every day. He’s such a great competitor.”
The Seminoles return to the courts on Saturday when they face No. 6 Texas at 11:00 am home at the Scott Speicher Tennis Center.
