Tallahassee, Fla. – The Florida State women’s tennis team (5-4, 0-1 ACC) dropped a tough 5-2 decision to No. 9 Miami (9-2, 2-0 ACC) in Coral Gables, Fla., on Friday, March 11, 2005. The Seminoles swept the doubles point while sophomore Roxanne Clarke (Cape Town, South Africa/Clapham) won in singles to account for FSU’s points.
“We put ourselves in a position to win against the ninth ranked team in the country,” said first-year head coach Jennifer Hyde. “Mihaela pushed the number one player in the country as far as you can push her without breaking, something I don’t think anyone has done this season. For us to come out and sweep doubles, that made a statement. Our number one double team (Moldovan and Deason) continues to prove why they are among the best in the nation.”
All three doubles teams won against Miami, marking the second time in as many games the Seminoles swept the doubles point. Senior Mihaela Moldovan (Bucharest, Romania/Emil Racovita) and junior Lindsay Deason (Ft. Myers, Fla./Boca Raton Prep), currently ranked #12 in the nation, bested the fourth-best team in the country in Audrey Banada and Megan Bradley, 8-4. The win was the pair’s seventh in nine matches this year.
In singles, Clarke took Staci Stevens to a third set tiebreaker to win at the number two position, 3-6, 6-4, 6-2. Moldovan also went to three sets, but lost to the nation’s top-ranked player, Bradley, 7-6, 6-7, 6-4.
The Seminoles face FIU at 2:00 p.m., in Miami Fla., on Saturday, March 12, 2005.
