Tallahassee, Fla. – Florida State women’s tennis student-athlete Mihaela Moldovan (Bucharest, Romania/Emil Racovita) was named ACC Women’s Tennis Performer of the Week for her role in upsetting No. 33 Alabama and beating UCF.
“Her performance this weekend was a huge individual and team accomplishment,” said first-year head coach Jennifer Hyde, who picked up her first win at the helm of the Seminole program this weekend. “Mihaela has high expectations for herself. She’s been working out and hitting more. She’s been doing everything that she can do, to get herself prepared for the tough opponents she is going to face. She’s ready for it; it is just a matter of putting the pieces together individually and as a team.”
Against the Tide, Moldovan and partner Lindsay Deason beat the twelfth-best doubles tandem in the nation at the number one singles flight in a tiebreaker to win 9-8(7-3). At number one singles, Moldovan took two sets from #8 Robin Stephenson to clinch the match for the No. 42 Seminoles. The Tribe had not picked up a win over Alabama since 1991.
“I think everyone is feeling confident from the week that we had,” continued Hyde. “Everyone feels like they are improving and getting better, stronger and competing harder and more effectively. We don’t want to peak now but everyone is starting to respect the process of improvement.”
Facing UCF, Moldovan only allowed two points in singles play, besting Kristina Lohmos at number one singles, 6-1, 6-1. Alongside partner Lindsay Deason, the 2004 CoSIDA Academic All-American won 8-1 at the No. 1 doubles flight against the Golden Knights.
