Tallahassee, FL – After 18 consecutive matches with a win at the number two singles position, junior Mihaela Moldovan secured a victory in her claim as one of the top Atlantic Coast Conference performers en route to her eventual position as one of the best women’s tennis players in the country. The Florida State junior women’s tennis player earned ACC Co-Player of the Week honors, which she is sharing with Duke’s Amanda Smith.
Moldovan won ACC Co-Player of the Week honors for her performance last week against N.C. State and higher-ranked, No. 38 Wake Forest, where she went 2-0 in singles and doubles action. The reigning NCAA South Region Rookie of the Year is undefeated in singles action this season.
Moldovan’s pair of conference victories over the weekend helped lead Florida State to a 4-0 conference start, its best since joining the conference in 1992.
Against No. 75 NC State Wolfpack, Moldovan won 6-2, 6-2 over the Nandita Chandrasekar. She also teamed with Roxanne Clarke for an 8-4 doubles win over Chandrasekar and Barbara Orlay.
In Sunday’s match against No. 38 Wake Forest, the Bucharest, Romania native earned her 18th straight victory defeating Wake’s Liz Proctor, 6-3, 6-1, at the number two singles position. In doubles action, Moldovan and Clarke picked up the win over the Demon Deacon duo of Davis and Schwartz, 8-4. The Seminoles went on to take the match, 6-1.
Florida State returns to the court this weekend at home against UNC and Duke on Friday and Sunday, respectively. Match times are set to begin at 2:00 p.m. on Friday and 12:00 p.m. on Sunday.
