Tallahassee – The Florida State women’s tennis team played its toughest match of the season, battling the second-ranked Florida Gators squad at Gainesville, FL, on Wednesday, February 18, 2004. Junior Mihaela Moldovan, ranked 79th in the country and 11th in the region, in singles, posted the Seminoles only point of the afternoon, upsetting #32 Julie Rotondi, 4-6, 7-5, 10-6.
In doubles, the Tribe fought hard against three ranked opponents. At number one doubles, newcomer Roxanne Clarke and Moldovan faced #8 Alexis Gordon and Julie Rotondi, losing to the talented tandem by a 9-7 score. At the two spot, newcomer Lindsay Deason and senior Anca Dumitrescu were bested by #13 Jennifer Magley and Serene Reyes, 8-3, while senior tandem Brooke Cordell and Christina Denny lost 8-1, to #33 Boglarka Berecz and Nina Suvak.
After winning the doubles point, the Tribe set out to put points on the board in the singles area. Moldovan was the only Seminole to record a point, besting the higher-ranked Rotondi (#32 nation) in three sets.
In other singles action, No. 63 Dumitrescu took the sixth-ranked Alexis Gordon to three sets at the number one position in a losing effort, 4-6, 7-6(6), 10-8. Deason was defeated by #16 Magley, 6-2, 7-6(5) at the number three position while Denny posted her second loss of the season at the hands of #27 Zerene Reyes in straight sets, 6-2, 6-3. Clarke, who evened the match at 1-1 after picking up a win in the second set, dropped the tiebreaker, 7-5 at the five spot. Junior Amberly Tantee, playing out of the six position, took Suvak to three sets, losing 6-2, 2-6, 6-0.
The Seminoles take a break in action, returning home to Tallahassee to face LSU at the Scott Speicher Tennis Center on Sunday, February 22. First serve is set for noon.
