WINSTON-SALEM, NC — Shortstop Brett Groves hit a game-winning two-run double in the eighth inning to lead No. 19 Florida State (20-7, 4-0 ACC) to a 9-6 come-from-behind victory over No. 20 Wake Forest (14-7, 2-3 ACC) in a three-game sweep of the Demon Deacons.
Left-hander Zach Diaz (3-0) pitched 4 1/3 innings of shutout ball to earn the win in relief of starter Chris Chavez. Diaz allowed just three hits and struck out three batters in his third win of the season.
The Seminoles rallied to score four runs and take a 8-6 lead in the eighth inning. Catcher Jeremy Salazar and centerfielder Brian Cox led off the inning with a pair of infield hits to set the table. Leftfielder Karl Jernigan slapped a line drive to right field to knock Salazar home. Shortstop Brett Groves belted a two-run double down the leftfield line to score Cox and Jernigan for the game-winning run. Groves then scored on a bunt basehit by third baseman Jose Zabala to give FSU a two-run advantage. Groves finished the day with three hits and two RBI.
Left-hander John Hendricks (5-1) gave up five runs on eight hits as he took the loss in 4 2/3 innings of relief for the Demon Deacons.
Designated hitter Terry Henderson extended his hitting streak to eight games as he blasted a two-run triple off the right field fence to tie the score at 3-3 in the fifth inning. Henderson then scored on a basehit by Salazar to give the Seminoles a 4-3 lead.
Wake Forest answered with three runs in the bottom of the fifth inning sparked by an RBI-double by third baseman Corey Slavik to take a 6-4 lead. Slavik drove in three runs on three hits, including two doubles on the day.
Right-hander Chris Chavez surrendered six runs on eight hits in 4 2/3 innings pitched. Chavez struck out five and walked three batters in the outing.
Salazar belted a solo home run to centerfield in the ninth inning for added insurance and a 9-6 advantage. Salazar was 4-for-5 with two RBI on the day.
