National Champion Seminoles Open Spring Practice

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (AP) – Florida State coach Bobby Bowden welcomed his
national champions to spring practice on Tuesday with his main goal to find a
few defensive tackles.

Chris Weinke returns at quarterback, along with a strong nucleus for next
fall, but Bowden must replace a pair of star tackles, All-American Corey Simon
and all-ACC Jerry Johnson.

“If we had those two defensive tackles back we’d be as good as we were last
year,” Bowden said as he prepares for his 25th season at Florida State.

The Seminoles opened spring practice with Chris Woods, Tony Benford and Rian
Cason taking turns at the defensive tackle spots.

“It’s a matter of them getting better,” Bowden said.

Two key defenders, end Roland Seymour and linebacker Tommy Polley, will miss
spring practice as they rehab from injuries sustained in Florida State’s 46-29
Sugar Bowl victory over Virginia Tech.

The team will work out only in helmets and shorts for the first three spring
practices.

Florida State takes a 21-game regular-season winning streak into its Aug. 26
season opener against Brigham Young in Jacksonville.
