Nebraska Claims Seminole Invitational Tournament Title

March 10, 2002

The 19th annual Seminole Invitational Tournament came to a close Sunday afternoon with two first-time finalists playing for the title. Fourth-ranked Nebraska (17-5), behind a one-hitter by All-Tournament pitcher Peaches James, defeated Minnesota (19-5) 4-0 to claim the school’s first-ever Seminole Invitational crown.

Minnesota reached the championship game after dominating No. 8 Michigan 7-0 to start Sunday’s action. The win put Minnesota at 4-1 for the tournament. The Cornhuskers defeated surprise semi-finalist Ball State 4-0 earlier in the afternoon and reached the championship with a perfect 5-0 record.

In other tournament action, Auburn, after starting the tournament 0-3, came back to dominate play in the Silver Bracket and won the bracket championship by downing Middle Tennessee 6-0. Massachusetts won the Gold Bracket consolation game by defeating Southern Illinois 3-1. Tallahassee-based Florida A&M fell 5-4 to Pittsburgh in the Silver Bracket consolation game.

Florida State finished the tournament with a 3-2 record and is now 20-9 on the year. The Seminoles will next be in action Monday, March 11 at home when they face Southern Illinois in a game that will be regionally televised by the Sunshine Network. The game is slated for a 6:00 p.m. start.
