CHARLOTTE, N.C. –
Florida State sophomore Jessica Negron advanced to the match play portion of the 2010 U.S. Women’s Amateur Championship as she finished among the top 64 golfers in the stroke play portion of the event with a two-day score of 149. She will face Kristen Park of Buna Park, Calif., on Wednesday at 9:50 in the first of six possible match play rounds at the Charlotte Country Club.
Negron (Ocala, Fla.) finished in the top 64 with a 36-hole total of 149 to finish inside the cut in order to advance to match play in the event. She played well in the second round of stroke play with an even par score of 72 after opening the tournament with a score of 77.
Negron will face Park in the first round of match play as the two are paired in the third match of the day. A total of 32 matches will be contested on Wednesday as the field is trimmed to 32 players. Competition in the event will continue through Sunday when a champion will be crowned. The semifinals are set for Saturday with the 36-hole championship scheduled for Sunday.
Negron has played well in the state of North Carolina this year as she earned a tied for nine place finish at the Pinehurst Challenge in March and a pair of top 30 finishes at the Bryan National Collegiate and the ACC Championship in two tournaments played during the month of April.
A victory over Park would vault her into a second round match-up against either Cydney Clanton (Rockwell, N.C) or Tiffany Lue (Rowland Heights, Calif.) on Thursday.
