BRYAN, Tex. (seminoles.com) –
Florida State’s Jessica Negron shot a 79 in the second round and is in a tie for 49th place in the individual standings with two rounds remaining in the NCAA Division I Women’s Championships on the Traditions Club Golf Course. Negron began the day in the top 10 of the individual standings but struggled with a challenging wind that picked up throughout the afternoon wave of golfers in the second round.
Following one of her best performances of her sophomore season, Negron was unable to get her game moving in the right direction on day two of the four day event. Still though, she carded 11 holes at par or better with three birdies – the same number she carded in the first round when she shot even par.
Negron enjoyed her best stretch of holes on her front nine (she began the day on hole No. 10) as she scored six consecutive holes at par or better with two birdies. She scored six holes in succession – par, birdie, par, birdie, par, par – at par or better to finish her first set of nine holes at just two over par. Negron then closed her back nine at five over par to finish the round with a seven over par score of 79.
The individual scores were much higher in the second round as compared to the first round as only 20 players in the 126 player field carded scores at par or better. In the first round 22 players shot even par or better.
The team scores were also considerably higher in round two as compared to round one.
UCLA, who holds the team lead with 36 holes remaining, shot a seven over par team score of 295 in the second round as compared to a one over par 289 in the first round. The Bruins hold a three stroke lead over Purdue and a four stroke lead over LSU. Austin Ernst of LSU shot a six under par 66 in the second round and leads Numa Gulyanamitta of Purdue by three stroke heading into Friday’s third round.
