PALO ALTO, Calif. (seminoles.com) –
Senior Jessica Negron finished in ninth place in the individual standings and the Florida State women’s golf team finished in 19th place in the team standings as the 2013 NCAA Division I West Regional Championships on the Stanford University Golf Course came to a close. Negron shot a 1 over par score of 72 in the final round and missed qualifying for the NCAA Championship finals by one stroke.
Negron completed her career with a 2 over par score of 215 with scores of 72-71-72. She missed a 10-foot putt for par on the final hole of the tournament and finished one stroke behind Jennifer Ha of Kent State for the second and final individual spot in the finals. The first spot went to Emilie Berger of Georgia who carded a 1 under par score of 212.
Florida State finished with a 295 team score in the third round – a scored that was tied for the fourth best team score of the final round. The Seminoles were led in the final round by sophomore Laure Castelain who carded an even par 72 – her best single round score of the tournament by three strokes. In addition to Castelain’s 71 and Negron’s 72, the Seminoles also counted scores of 75 by sophomore Carlton Kuhlo and 77 by Olivia Hullert.
“I am really proud of the way our team fought back after two really tough rounds after which they could have packed it in,” said head coach Amy Bond. “They all showed the resolved that we have been talking about all season long and played well today. I am disappointed that the season is over but we are moving forward in a very positive way and today was a great illustration of that progress.”
Negron (Ocala) continued to play as Florida State’s leader in this tournament just as she has done throughout the season. She played her third best round of the year with her 215 total and plus three score vs. par. It marked the fifth time in 11 events during her senior season that she has finished with a score of three over par or lower. Negron’s ninth place individual finish marked her 11th career top 10 finish and her second top 10 finish in an NCAA Regional Championship.
Negron’s 215 score is tied for the third best score by a Seminole in an NCAA Regional Championship appearance. Her ninth place finish was the ninth top-10 finish in an NCAA regional championship and she became only the second player in school history to earn multiple top-10 finishes in NCAA regional championship play.
Castelain (Bordeaux, France) played the best round of the day for the Seminoles as she carded an even par 71. He score tied her best mark of the year (she also carded a 71 in the second round of the Marsh Landing Invitational) and came within one stroke of tying her career best round of 70. Castelain’s 54-hole tournament score of 223 ranks as her second best of the year behind only a 219 total in the fall season opening GolfWeek Challenge.
Kuhlo (Tallahassee, Fla.) also carded her best round of the tournament with a 4 over par 75. She had carded identical scores of 79 in the first two rounds. Kuhlo carded four birdies in the third round after carding a total of two in the first two rounds and totaled 11 rounds art par or better in the final round.
The Seminoles open the fall season in September at the Mo Morial Tournament at Texas A&M University.
