ATHENS, Ga. (seminoles.com) –
Florida State junior Jessica Negron shot a 1under par 71 in the final round and moved into a tie for 28th in the final individual standings and the Seminole women’s golf team finished in 13th place in the team standings as play at the 40th Annual Liz Murphey Collegiate Classic at the University of Georgia came to a close. The Seminoles were led in the individual standings by freshman Laure Castelain who finished in a tie for 23rd place in the individual standings to earn her second consecutive and third career top 25 finish.
No. 2 ranked Alabama led the team race wire to wire to earn the championship with a 12 stroke victory over Georgia. The Crimson Tide led a parade of SEC schools at the top of the standings with four schools in the top five and six in the top nine of the team standings. Jennifer Kirby of Alabama, one of only eight golfers in the 90 person field to shoot at or under par in all three rounds, won the individual championship with a 7 under par score of 209. She defeated Laura Gonzalez of Purdue by one stroke for medalist honors.
Negron (Ocala, Fla.) played nearly flawless golf with 17 holes scored at par or better with two birdies in the final round. She carded only one hole above par the entire round – with her only bogey coming with three holes remaining in her round. Negron was two under par through her first 15 holes of the round and end her day with back to back holes of par.
Negron began the day in a tie for 45th place and moved up 17 holes during the round as she carded her second round of par or better golf in nine round this spring.
“I feel like I started to strike the ball better in this tournament,” said Negron. “My confidence will build after this strong round; I am really looking forward to playing next weekend at the Bryan.”
Castelain (Bordeaux, France) carded a 75 in the final round and finished in a tie for 23rd place with a three round total of 221. It marked the third time in her career and second time in the last three events that she has finished as Florida State’s leader Castelain finished with three rounds at 75 or better (73-73-75) with her 221 total finishing as the third best tournament of her career.
“I am very happy with our ability to battle back during his event,” said head coach Amy Bond. “If we learned anything about ourselves, we know that we can play well with our backs against the wall. The challenge is not to get down so we have to battle back.”
Florida State closes out its regular season at the Bryan National Collegiate April 6-8 in Greensboro, N.C. The Seminoles begin play in the ACC Championship at the Sedgefield Country Club in Greensboro on April 13.
