GREENSBORO, N.C. (seminoles.com) –
Florida State junior Jessica Negron and seniors Maria Salinas and Hannah Thomson are all in a tie for 19th place in the individual standings and the Florida State women’s golf team is in a tie for eighth place in the team standings after the first round of the 24th Annual ACC Championship at the Sedgefiield Country Club.
The event began with a first of three rounds of 18 holes on Friday and runs through 54 holes with its conclusion scheduled for Sunday.
No. 8 Duke, the second highest ranked team in the event, is the team leader after the first round. The Blue Devils hold a 10 stroke lead over No. 6 ranked North Carolina. The Seminoles are only seven strokes out of the top five and nine strokes from moving into the top four of the team standings. Alejandra Canrejo of Duke is in first place in the individual standings with a two under par score of 69. She was the only golfer in the 45 player field to finish with a first round score under 70.
The Seminoles played their best golf at the end of the round as they made up four strokes over the final three holes. Thomson led the way with three birdies on her final three holes; Negron had two birdies on her final three and freshman Laure Castelain birdied her final hole of the afternoon. Four of Florida State’s five golfers birdied the 18th and final hole with the only other hole being counted as a par.
“The golf course certainly got the best of us today,” said head coach Amy Bond. “I was encouraged that we did finish strong and hope that trend continues tomorrow and Sunday. We have the ability, we just have to go out and play like we know how and I think we will be fine.”
Thomson (Perth, Australia) was the Seminoles’ closer in the first round with a turkey – three consecutive birdies – on holes No. 16, 17 and 18. She was 8 over par after 15 holes and finished at 5 over par. Thomson led the Seminoles with four birdies on the afternoon. She finished with a five over par score of 76
Negron (Ocala, Fla.) also finished well with birdies on her final two holes – Nos. 17 and 18. She was 7 strokes over par after 14 holes and finished with a five over par score of 76.
Senior Maria Salinas (Lima, Peru), who finished in a tie for 10th place in the individual standings at the 2010 ACC Championship, played her best golf at the beginning of the round. With one birdie and seven holes at par, she was at even par after eight holes. Salinas finished her round with five holes at par or better with one birdie over her final 10 holes of the round. She, too, carded a five over par score of 76.
The Seminoles will play in the first wave of the second round with Miami and Maryland and will tee off beginning at 8:30.
