Florida State senior Jessica Negron carded a 3 over par score of 75 and is in a tie for 33rd place in the individual standings and the Seminole women’s golf team is in 15th place in the team standings after the first round of the Bryan National Collegiate on the Champion’s Course at the Bryan Park Golf and Enrichment Center. Negron is only four strokes out of the top five in the individual standings as she plays for her second top five finish in six events during the spring season.

The event includes 12 of the top 50 teams in the nation including the Seminoles who are ranked No. 42 by GolfStat. There are 15 of the top 50 ranked individual players in the nation competing in the event.

No. 15 Virginia leads the team standings with a 7 under par team total of 281. The Cavaliers lead second place and No. 7 ranked Vanderbilt by five strokes. Virginia has three players in the top three and four players in the top 18 of the individual standings after 18 of the 54 holes have been played. Elizabeth Brightwell of Virginia is the individual leader with a 4 under par score of 68. She leads Rene Sobolewski of Vanderbilt by one stroke.

Negron (Ocala, Fla.), the Seminoles’ low scoring golfer and the No. 7 ranked golfer in the ACC, carded a 3 over par score of 75 in the first round. She played well over the course of her first nine holes (each of the five Seminoles started on hole No. 10) and was one stroke under par at the turn. She was one under through her first 11 holes with 10 holes at par or better with two birdies. Negron was at even par with five holes remaining and finished the round with her 10 single round score of 75 or better in 12 rounds this spring. Negron has carded a 75 or better in nine of her last 10 rounds since totaling a 72 in the first round of the Florida State Match-Up on February 15.

Negron is Florida State’s leading golfer with a career low scoring average of 74.12 in 19 rounds during eight tournaments as a senior.

Sophomore Laure Castelain (Bordeaux, France), who is playing in her 17th consecutive career event, is in a tie for 45th place in the individual standings with a 4 over par score of 76. She began the round well with a birdie on her first hole and totaled a team-leading three birdies during the round. Castelain was at or below par for the first eight holes of the round but was 3 over par on her second set of nine holes. Castelain scored 12 holes at par or better with her three birdies in the first round.

Senior Mary Beth Ramsay (Orlando, Fla.), who is playing in her career-high sixth tournament of the year, carded a 78 and is tied with teammate Alex Milan in the individual standings. Ramsay played 12 of the 18 holes in the first round at par while Milan totaled two birdies and eight holes scored at par in her first round of play. Milan is playing in her third event of the spring and her first since the Florida State Match-Up in February.

“We battled today and I am proud of all five girls for that,” said Head Coach Amy Bond. “We battled through some tough weather which pushed the start time of round back by an hour because of a frost warning and then battled some tricky conditions after we made the turn. I was pleased with their play early but we made some mistakes late in the round. Of the scores we counted, we were 16 over par after the turn as compared to plus three on our first nine holes.

“We have to play much better in the next two rounds to play our way back up the leaderboard,” said Bond. “There are so many good teams here that would serve us well to use moving day (Saturday’s second round) to move back up the ladder.”

The Seminoles well tee off from the 10th tee with Tennessee and Florida with the round scheduled to begin at 9:05 a.m.
