ATHENS, Ga.- Senior Michael Neubacher’s third-place finish on the platform was good enough to earn him a berth at the NCAA Championships on the final day of the NCAA Zone B Championships in Athens, Ga.
“Mike did a great job and dove lights out under a lot of pressure,” diving coach Patrick Jeffrey said. “It was a tough meet because of there being so many divers. It’s difficult to get in rhythm with so much time between dives. Him coming through on the last day says a lot about his mental stamina to stay sharp through such a long weekend.”
Neubacher’s 12-dive total of 778.85 was 75 points higher than fourth-place allowing him to earn the final spot in the NCAA meet. Freshman Thomas Neubacher and senior Landon Marzullo also made the finals finishing in sixth (662.20) and eighth (637.00) respectively. Sophomore Nick Klein finished in 20th-place (251.70).
Seminoles Earn Olympic Trial and Senior National Times at Florida State Invitational
“I was excited with how we swam considering we haven’t swam long course in quite awhile,” head coach Neil Harper said. “We had some Olympic Trial and Senior National cuts which is tough to do at this point in the season. I thought the kids had a great attitude and I liked seeing that a lot of the swimmers know that they can get those qualifying marks.”
Hayes began the meet with an Olympic Trial cut in the 200 individual medley with a long course meters time of 2:06.53. Holderness followed suit in the 100 breast with a time of 1:03.20.
Three women earned Senior National marks beginning with the 200 individual medley where freshman McKayla Lightbourn (2:19.72) and Jessica Sabotin (2:20.07) made the qualifying time. Sophomore Kristine Polley joined the duo with a Senior National time in the 100 breast (1:12.74).
The Florida State Invitational will continue on Sunday with prelims beginning at 9:30 a.m., and finals at 5:30 p.m. For meet results log onto www.seminoles.com.
