Nevestad Leads Men’s Golf team Into Third Place At Lexus/Naples Intercollegiate

NAPLES, Fla. –
Florida State University junior Torstein Nevestad shot a career-low 65 in the first round and is in a tie for third place in the individual standings and the 38th ranked Seminole men’s golf team is in third place in the team standings after the first two rounds of the second annual Lexus/Naples Intercollegiate at the Hammock Bay Golf and Country Club. Nevestad led two Florida State players into the top 10 and three in the top 15 of the individual standings as the Seminoles play for their second consecutive top three team finish of the season. The Seminoles finished in third place at the spring season opening Gator Invitational last weekend.

Ryan Baca of Baylor carded a six-under par total of 138 and is tied with Kyle Reifers of Wake Forest for first place in the individual standings. Baca and his Baylor teammates are tied with Reifers and his Wake Forest teammates for first place in the team standings. Florida State is five strokes behind the Bears and the Deacons in third place.

Nevestad (Oslo, Norway) opened the tournament with six consecutive birdies on his first nine holes, pared he next eight and birdied the final hole to finish with his career-low score. He carded a two-over par 74 in the second round and is only one shot behind the co-leaders heading into Tuesday’s third and final round of the event.

Sophomore Jonas Blixt (Hammaro, Sweden) is in seventh place in the individual standings after carding a three-under par total of 139. He played both of Monday’s rounds under par with a one-under par 71 over the first 18 holes and a two-under 70 in the second round. Blixt is playing in his first tournament of the spring after missing the Gator Invitational with a back injury.

Freshman Nicholas Smith (Ocala, Fla.) is in a tie for 11th place individual standings with a two-round total of even-par 144. He carded a three-under par 69 in the second round after carding a three-over par 75 in round one. Smith is only six strokes behind the co-leaders heading into the final 18 holes. Sophomore Tommy Rymer (Hastings, Minn.), who earned the first top 25 finish of his career at the Gator Invitational, is in a tie for 21st place in the individual standings with a four-over par total of 148. Freshman Matt Savage (Lexington, Ky.) is in a tie for 35th place with an eight-over par total of 152.

The event concludes with a third round of 18 holes beginning Tuesday morning at 8 a.m.

Florida State plays host to the Seminole Intercollegiate beginning March 5 at Golden Eagle Country Club in Tallahassee.
