Neville Named Tournament MVP

Sept. 5, 2009

LAS CRUCES, NM – The Florida State volleyball team capped off the New Mexico State Tournament with a 3-0 sweep in an exhibition match against a team comprised of a combination of the senior, junior and youth Italian National Teams Saturday afternoon.

Following the straight-sets victory (25-16, 25-23, 27-25) over the Italians, it was then made known that FSU is well represented on the All-Tournament Team.

Tournament organizers announced at the conclusion of the event that FSU junior outside hitter Stephanie Neville was named the MVP of the matches. Senior outside Mira Djuric also made the All-Tournament Team, which included Illinois’ Laura DeBruler and Erin Johnson and New Mexico State’s Kelsi Phillips as well.

Against Italy, Seminoles head coach Chris Poole was pleased with his team’s ability to battle back after early deficits.

“We were pushed in games two and three at the end and had to come back against a very good team to get the win,” Poole said. “The girls really stepped up in a big way to get the sweep.”

While all statistics were unofficial as it was an exhibition match, Neville paced FSU (5-1) with nine kills while Djuric connected on seven, freshman Fatma Yildirim and senior Jordana Price had six apiece and senior Brianna Barry had four.

True freshman Sareea Freeman also added two kills.

“Sareea played one of the middle positions the entire match and Brianna and Jordana switched off in the other middle position,” Poole said. “Sareea again did very well and is gaining confidence in her transition to the Division I level.”

Defensively, junior Taylor Wilson had eight digs, freshman Courtney Zuber had five and Yildirim had four.

Djuric, sophomore Rachael Morgan and Price all had three blocks each.

“This was a very good match for us to play because Italy has a lot of experience and threw a lot of different things at us,” Poole said. “We have made a lot of improvement over the past two weeks.”

Florida State will now return home Sunday before beginning preparations for the team’s third regular-season tournament next weekend.

The Seminoles will travel to South Florida to take part in the FIU/Miami Tournament Sept. 12-13.
