TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – The Florida State women’s tennis team was represented by two newcomers at the Roberta Alison Fall Classic, hosted by the University of Alabama this weekend. Juniors Kristina Schleich and Laurence Porry each picked up their first wins as Seminoles in both singles and doubles.
“It was an exciting weekend to finally watch Kristina and Laurence compete,” associate head coach Oliver Foreman said. “I know they have been itching to get out there and for them to finally compete in such a strong event at Alabama gave both the girls a great deal of confidence and some invaluable experience.”
In the Orange Draw, Schleich played her way into the championship match of the bracket behind two solid wins. On Friday, Schleich defeated Kristy Dodge of Michigan 6-2, 6-1 in her first match on the day. She followed that outing with a three-set victory against Chaimaa Roudami of Georgia State 6-2, 1-6, 6-4, just hours after playing both a singles and a doubles match.
“I was tremendously impressed by Kristina’s warrior like approach on court,” Foreman said. “After battling some injury issues she competed unbelievably hard on Friday. In her second singles match of the day on Friday, she took her body to the limit and pulled off a great result in a three hour match.”
In her final match of the tournament, Schleich competed in another three-set match, however this time she fell to Ashley Kitchen of Auburn 7-6 (5), 4-6, 6-4.
“For Kristina to reach the finals in her first tournament of the season was a great example of what we expect from her,” Foreman said. “She delivers in every match, no matter what side of the bed she wakes up on. She will go out there and scratch and claw her way out of a match to win. This is the type of resilience that sees you playing in the line-up as a Seminole.”
Porry played in the Green Draw of the tournament, picking up her first win in round one against Irina Constantinide of Middle Tennessee State, 6-2, 6-2. Porry fell in her final match on Friday to Stephanie Fox of Kentucky in the second round at 6-2, 6-2.
“The singles matches this weekend for Laurence were the first matches since March or April,” Foreman said. “She has a tremendously powerful and assertive game and once she adapts to the new training environment at Florida State she will have the ability and the game to beat almost anyone in the country.”
On Saturday, Porry played in one more match, where she lost to Yui Lynn Miao of Clemson, 6-3, 6-2.
Schleich and Porry teamed up and played in the Bronze Draw of doubles, picking up two victories. On Friday, Schleich and Porry defeated the pair of Yuiri Nomoto and Constantinde of Middle Tennessee State 8-6. They came back on Saturday to beat the pair of Alexandra Perper and Sarai Flores from Mississippi State 8-5.
“Both girls will certainly have a role in competing for Florida State this year,” Foreman said. “Both have added great depth to an already strong Seminole squad.”
The Seminoles will prepare for another big weekend of tennis starting on Oct. 19, as they will head to Tampa, Fla. for the ITA South Regional Championships. The tournament will run through the weekend until Oct. 21, with a chance for players to qualify for the ITA National Indoor Championships held Nov. 8 – 11 in New York.
