TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – Catcher Jeremiah Klosterman delivered a two-run double in the seventh inning to break a 6-6 tie as No. 1 Florida State (20-3) went on to a 10-6 victory over The Citadel (9-8) at Dick Howser Stadium.
Left-hander Chris Ginn (2-0) earned the win for FSU as he pitched three scoreless innings of relief while striking out two batters.
Right-hander Chris Chavez struck out eight batters in six innings of relief of starting pitcher Mike Smalley. Chavez scattered gave up three runs and scattered seven hits in the outing. Smalley faced four batters, giving up three runs on two hits. Reliever Kyle Bunn (1-1) gave up four unearned runs on four hits in the loss for the Bulldogs. Bunn struck out two batters in the appearance.
Designated-hitter John Halliday belted a three-run homer in the third inning to help the Seminoles come back from a 3-0 deficit. First baseman Kevin Cash singled and scored on a wild pitch as FSU took a 4-3 lead.
Second baseman Marshall McDougall homered to left field, driving in two runs in the fourth inning as the Seminoles took a 6-3 lead. Citadel third baseman Aaron Haigler cut it to a one-run game with a two-run basehit. Pinch-hitter Dallas McPherson singled and scored on a ground ball by catcher Jay Morgan.
Each Seminole starter recorded at least one hit in the game. Florida State will host The Citadel tomorrow at 3:30 p.m.
