WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – Junior right fielder Carlos Brackley hit a pinch-hit,
two-run home run in the bottom of the eighth inning to lift the Wake Forest
Demon Deacons to a 7-4 victory over the top-ranked Florida State Seminoles
at Hooks Stadium on Saturday.
David Bush (1-0) pitched the final two innings in relief, giving up no runs
on one hit to pick up the win for Wake Forest. Nick Whidden (1-1) gave up a
run on no hits to take the loss for FSU.
The game was close throughout with Wake Forest taking a 2-0 lead in the
bottom of the first when Corey Slavik reached base on a fielder’s choice,
scoring Jason Aquilante. Florida State scored a run in the second on an RBI
single by Pichi Balet and another in the third on Ryan Barthelemy’s RBI
single to center field.
After Wake took the lead back with a run in the fourth, Florida State took
its first lead of the series with two runs in the seventh. John-Ford Griffin
and Marshall McDougall drove in the runs for the Seminoles. Wake tied the
game with a run in the bottom of the seventh when Chase Voshell singled to
left field bringing in Jamie Athas to tie the score at 4-4. After Brackley
hit his second home run of the season to give the Deacs the lead for good,
Wake added an insurance run when Cory Sullivan scored on a wild pitch.
Voshell went 3-for-4 and drove in two runs and Slavik and Dan Conway each
drove in a run to go along with Brackley’s two RBI to lead Wake Forest at
the plate. Conway also hit his team-leading eighth home run of the season.
For Florida State, Griffin, McDougall, Barthelemy and Michael Futrell each
drove in runs.
The win is the second in two days over the Seminoles (24-4, 3-2 ACC) for the
Deacs (17-6, 3-2 ACC). It marks the first time the Seminoles have lost an
ACC series since 1998. Wake will attempt to sweep the Seminoles in the third
game of the series Sunday, with the first pitch scheduled for 1:30 p.m. at
