TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – No. 1 Florida State ripped four home runs
enroute to a 9-4 victory over No. 3 North Carolina completing a
three-game sweep of the Tar Heels in front of 2,891 fans at Dick Howser

The Seminoles (29-3, 9-0 ACC) extended their winning streak to
15 games, while North Carolina dropped to 22-5 and 2-4 in the ACC.

Right-hander Blair Varnes (7-0) scattered eight hits and held
UNC to three runs in eight innings of work. Varnes struck out six
batters without a walk in the victory.

Left-hander Ryan Snare (2-1) gave up six runs on five hits and
five walks in four-plus innings and took the loss for North Carolina.
Snare had three strikeouts on the day.

The Tar Heels jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first inning with
an RBI-double by second baseman Chris LaMarsh who came home on a basehit
up the middle by centerfielder Jarrett Shearin.

Second baseman Marshall McDougall and designated-hitter Chris
Hart belted a pair of two-run home runs in the third inning to highlight
FSU’s five-run rally. McDougall’s homer was his third in as many days
and it extended his hitting streak to 23 games. Rightfielder Matt Diaz
also singled and scored on a bouncer by first baseman Kevin Cash in the
inning as the Seminoles took a 5-2 lead.

North Carolina first baseman Ryan Blake singled and scored on a
wild pitch in the fifth to cut FSU’s lead to 5-3, but Diaz matched it
for the Seminoles with a solo home run in the bottom of the inning.
Shortstop Brett Groves reached on an infield basehit and scored on a
single by centerfielder Karl Jernigan to make it a 7-3 ballgame in the

Diaz doubled in the seventh for his third basehit of the day and
was knocked home on catcher Jeremiah Klosterman’s two-run shot to
rightfield for a 9-3 FSU advantage.

Wes Reynolds belted a pinch-hit home run off reliever Mike
DiBlasi in the ninth to wrap up the scoring.
