No. 1 Baseball travels to Jacksonville

April 13, 1999

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – Top-ranked Florida State (36-4, 14-1 ACC) will travel to
Jacksonville (25-12) as the Seminoles play just their seventh road game of
the season. FSU has a consensus No. 1 ranking by Collegiate Baseball,
Baseball America, and Baseball Weekly/ESPN. The 40 voting coaches gave the
Seminoles all but one first-place vote in this week’s Baseball Weekly/ESPN
Top 25. The Seminoles 21-game winning streak was snapped Saturday
against Clemson, one short of the school record of 22 games held by the
1991 and 1996 teams. 2B Marshall McDougall is riding a 31-game hitting
streak in which he is batting .418 (56-for-134) with 41 RBI. RF Matt
Diaz has hit safely in 35 of 40 games this year and leads the team with 13
home runs. LHP Zach Diaz will make his first start since 1997 against
Jacksonville. It will be the fifth start and the 102nd appearance of his
career. CF Karl Jernigan saw action over the weekend in the Clemson
series as a pinch runner due to a fractured right fifth finger. He will be
available as a pinch runner against JU and is expected to be able to bat
and field this weekend against Miami. FSU is batting .335, has hit 56
home runs while averaging 8.9 runs per game. The Seminole pitching staff
has posted a 2.76 ERA and opponents are batting just .214 against FSU.
The staff is averaging 10.1 strikeouts per game. FSU has allowed
double-digit hits by opponents only eight times this season. Despite the
impressive pitching number, FSU pitchers have recorded just one shutout
this season (4/9 vs. Clemson) The FSU defense boasts a .962 fielding
average and has posted 21 games with one or no errors. FSU has won 20 of
its 40 games by a 5+ run margin and has held opponents to three runs or
less in 22 of 40 games. Head coach Mike Martin is in his 20th season as
the Seminoles skipper, collecting a 1,058-354-3 record over the past 20
