No. 1 Florida State Falls to No. 13 Wichita State, 8-1

MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. – No. 13 Wichita State handed the No. 1 Florida
State Seminoles their third loss of the season with a 8-1 win in the
Hormel Foods Baseball Classic at the Metrodome.

“This is as badly as I can remember getting beat in over two
years,” said head coach Mike Martin. “Wichita State looked like they
were in another league. You’ve got to give them credit. They did a
great job.”


Wichita State right-hander Ben Christensen (2-1) held the
Seminoles to one run on five hits in seven innings pitched in the win
for the Shockers. Christensen struck out six batters and walked two in
the outing.


FSU right-hander Jon McDonald (2-1) took his first loss of the
year despite striking out nine batters in 6 1/3 innings pitched.
McDonald surrendered six runs on eight hits and four walks. Four of
McDonald’s runs were earned.


Wichita State (10-4) took an early 1-0 lead as left fielder Jeff
Ryan walked and scored on a basehit to left field by centerfielder Koyie
Hill in the first inning. The Seminoles (14-3) tied the score when
catcher Jeremiah Klosterman doubled and scored on a basehit by second
baseman Marshall McDougall in the third inning


The Shockers regained the lead with back-to-back double by
second baseman Blake Blasi and Ryan to start their half of the third
inning. Blasi came home on a McDonald wild pitch, while Ryan scored on
a sacrifice fly to centerfield by Hill.


Wichita State added three runs in the seventh inning after
shortstop Kevin Hooper reached on an error by shortstop Kevin Cash and
Blasi a infield hit to set the table for Ryan who ripped a basehit up
the middle. Ryan then stole home to give the Shockers a 6-1 lead.

The Shockers increased their lead to 8-1 on three doubles in the
eighth inning off reliver Zach Diaz.
