No. 1 Florida State Hosts Western Carolina

Feb. 25, 2002

#1 FLORIDA STATE (12-4)

Florida State held down the top spot in the Baseball Weekly/ESPN Coaches poll this week
after going 2-1 last week. The Seminoles look to rebound from Sunday’s loss at Jacksonville
with Tuesday and Wednesday games against Western Carolina. The 13-4 loss to JU not only
snapped FSU’s six-game winning streak, but it also ended All-American Ryan
Barthelemy’s
33-game hitting streak as he went 0-for-4 in the game. Barthelemy tied Marshall McDougall for the second-longest hitting
streak in school history, falling one short of J.D. Drew’s record. Matt
Lynch
had the top pitching performance of the weekend, throwing 7.1 scoreless innings and
giving up one hit in Florida State’s 1-0 win over JU on Saturday. Nick
Rogers
has been the Tribe’s top hitter over the last four games, going 7-for-15 (.467)
with two home runs, two doubles, four runs scored and seven RBI. After the Tuesday and
Wednesday games against WCU, Florida State will host Siena on Thursday. The Seminoles will
play Friday and Saturday games at No. 6 Florida before hosting the Gators in Tallahassee on
Sunday.

WESTERN CAROLINA (4-2)

Western Carolina is 4-2 on the year after losing two of three this weekend. WCU lost to
Virginia Tech 5-1 on Friday, beat Virginia 4-3 on Saturday, and fell to West Virginia 12-5
Sunday. First baseman Alan Beck has reached safely (by hit, walk or hit by pitch) in 62
straight games, which is the longest such streak in the country. Beck is hitting .375 this
season with two homers and seven RBI. The Catamounts will start left-hander Brad Josey (0-0,
0.00 ERA) on Tuesday and right-hander Jared Burton (1-1, 2.25 ERA) on Wednesday. WCU’s
pitching staff is coached by Chris Roberts, who was an All-American as an outfielder/pitcher
at Florida State in 1992.

TELEVISION & RADIO

Both games against Western Carolina will be carried live in Tallahassee by WFLA 1270, FSU’s
flagship station. Lee Bowen and Jim Crosby will begin coverage 15 minutes prior to game time.
