TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – Second baseman Sam Scott led the No. 1 Florida
State Seminoles with three hits and three RBI as they defeated Charleston
Southern, 12-2, at Dick Howser Stadium.
The Seminoles (10-0) scored four runs in the first inning on five
hits after centerfielder Karl Jernigan led off with a double to left field.
Third baseman Marshall McDougall and designated hitter John Halliday
contributed RBI-singles, while Scott drove in two runs with a basehit to
right field for FSU’s offensive production in the inning.
Right fielder Matt Diaz tripled to right field in the second inning
to drive in McDougall who reached on a walk. Scott belted a solo homer in
the third inning increasing FSU’s lead to 6-1.
Florida State broke the game open with four runs in the fourth
inning sparked by an RBI-double by Diaz and two-run homer by Halliday.
Halliday collected three RBI on the day. Left fielder Mike Futrell hit his
first collegiate home run, a solo shot, in the fifth inning.
Left-hander Mike Smalley (1-0) earned the win in his first college
start, holding the Buccaneers to one run on four hits in five innings. He
also struck out two batters in the outing.
Charleston Southern (3-4) scored a single run in the third inning
on an RBI-basehit by Chad Thompson. The Buccaneers added a second run in
the seventh as second baseman John Rocco reached on an error and scored on
a sacrifice fly.
Left-hander Brad French (0-2) surrendered 11 runs on 12 hits in
five innigns pitched. French walked two and stuck out two batters.
The Seminoles resume the series with Charleston Southern tomorrow,
Feb. 17th, at 3:30 p.m.
