GAINESVILLE, Fla. – First baseman John Halliday drove in four runs on three hits as No. 1 Florida State rebounded against No. 6 Florida with a 8-4 victory today to even the season series in front of 5,203 fans at McKethan Stadium.
Right-hander Nick Stocks (4-0) held the Gators scoreless for six innings while allowing four hits in 7 1/3 innings pitched. Stocks struck out eight batters and surrendered three runs in the outing. Stocks left two runners on base before he was relieved by southpaw Chris Ginn in the eighth inning. Ginn gave up a three-run homer to first baseman Jason Dill as Florida (5-4) cut FSU’s lead to 8-4 before closing the inning.
The Seminoles collected 15 hits for their 10th game with double-digit hits. FSU also recorded its fifth errorless game of the season.
Florida State (13-2) scored two runs on three hits including an RBI-basehit by centerfielder Karl Jernigan in the second inning to take a 2-0 lead. Third baseman Marshall McDougall led off the third inning with a double to centerfield and scored on a basehit to left by Halliday to add another run to the Seminoles total.
Left fielder Chris Smith singled and came home on a basehit by right fielder Matt Diaz in the fouth inning. Diaz blasted a solo home run to left center in the sixth inning and finished the day with three hits and two RBI. Halliday followed Diaz with a solo homer to right center as FSU increased its lead to 6-0.
Florida left fielder Pete Nystrom ended FSU’s shutout with a solo home run to left field in the seventh inning. The Seminoles answered in the top of the eighth inning with two more runs on a basehit by Halliday.
Florida right-hander Alex Hart (0-2) lasted just one-plus after leaving the game with tightness in his shoulder. Hart gave up two runs on three hits and struck out two batters in the abbreviated outing.
