TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – Designated-hitter John Halliday drove in four
runs on three hits and second baseman Marshall McDougall drove in three
runs on four hits as they led No. 1 Florida State (17-3, 1-0, ACC) to a
7-3 win over Virginia (8-10, 0-1 ACC) in the Seminoles’ Atlantic Coast
Conference season opener.
Right-hander Jon McDonald (3-1) struck out eight batters and
held the Cavaliers to four hits in seven innings pitched. McDonald gave
up three unearned runs and two walks in the outing.
McDougall ripped a two-run home run in the eighth inning for his
fourth hit of the night and right fielder Matt Diaz followed suit with a
solo homer to left field for his fourth basehit as well.
Virginia right-hander Casey Kennedy (1-4) surrendered six runs
on 10 hits in six-plus innings in the loss for the Cavaliers. Kennedy
struck out three batters and walked one in the game.
The Seminoles took a 2-0 led in the third inning on four
singles. Left fielder Chris Smith led off the third with a basehit up
the middle and McDougall reached base on an infield hit. Diaz drove in
Smith on a single to left, while McDougall scored on a basehit by
designated hitter John Halliday.
Virginia came back in the top of the fourth with a three-run
home run by right fielder Julian Gonzalez to take a 3-2 lead.
Halliday drove in McDougall for the second time in the game in
the fifth inning to knot the score at 3-3, while Diaz singled and came
home on a ground ball by first baseman Kevin Cash as FSU took a one-run
FSU increased its lead to 7-3 on a RBI-basehit by McDougall and
two-run single by Halliday in the seventh inning.
