Salem, Va. – No. 1 Florida State (48-8-1, 20-5 ACC) pounded out 14 hits en route to a 13-0 victory over Duke (17-35, 3-22 ACC) in the opening round of the ACC Tournament. Starter Matt Lynch (12-3) tied a season-high with seven strikeouts, while going a season-long eight innings to pick up his 12th win of the season. Lynch only allowed five hits with one walk in the win. Tony McQuade led the Seminole offense going 3-for-4 with two runs and two RBI. The Seminole offense has recorded double digit runs and hits in nine consecutive games.
FSU jumped out to 3-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning on a pair of errors from the Duke infield. Stephen Drew singled, moved to second as McQuade was walked before advancing to third on Tony Richie’s fly out to right field. Jerrod Brown reached on a fielding error by Duke second baseman Michael Golom, scoring Drew from third. Blake Balkcom also reached on a fielding error that went through the legs of the first baseman and moved to second as the ball rolled into right field bringing home McQuade from second and pushing Brown to third. Chris Hart’s sacrifice fly to center field plated Brown for the third run of the inning.
The Seminoles added three more runs in the fourth to make the score 6-0. Bryan Zech singled to left and Aaron Cheesman was hit by pitch to put runners at first and second. Daniel Wardell’s RBI single to left scored Zech for the game’s fourth run. With one out, McQuade’s two RBI double down the right field line plated Cheesman and Wardell for the six run lead.
Zech led off the sixth inning with a single back to the pitcher. Wardell followed with his third home run of the season, a deep shot over the left field wall to make the score 8-0.
Florida State put a single run on the board in the seventh on Cheesman’s RBI double to right center to score Hart who singled to left to start the inning.
FSU scored four more runs in the eighth in what proved to be the final score of 13-0. Balkcom’s two-run homer to center highlighted the inning as Richie and Brown each had an RBI in the frame.
Four Seminoles had multi-hit performances on the afternoon. McQuade (3-for-4), Richie (2-for-4), Zech (2-for-5) and Wardell (2-for-4) paced the Florida State offense.
Blue Devil starter Russell Durfee took the loss for Duke after allowing eight runs (six earned) on seven hits with two strikeouts in 5.1 innings of work.
Florida State will play North Carolina Tar Heels (38-19, 14-11 ACC) in the second round on Friday, May 23. The Tar Heels downed Clemson in their opening round match-up by a score of 10-2. LHP Trent Peterson (10-1, 2.61 ERA) is scheduled to take the mound for the Seminoles.
