RALEIGH, N.C. — Third baseman Kevin Cash knocked in two runs on three hits and first baseman Ryan Barthemely collected three RBI and two hits as No. 1 Florida State (24-3, 3-0 ACC) defeated No. 19 North Carolina State (20-6, 1-5 ACC), 12-1, for the Seminoles second sweep of an Atlantic Coast Conference opponent this year.

Right-hander Blair Varnes (6-0) hurled 5 1/3 scoreless innings before the Wolfpack ended the shutout. Varnes held NC State to one run while scattering six hits and striking out five batters in the seven-inning outing.

The Seminoles chased right-hander Dustin Baker (3-1) in just 2 1/3 innings after he surrendered three runs on seven hits and two walks.


Cash laid down a bunt basehit to drive in centerfielder Karl Jernigan who led off the game with a double to left field giving the Tribe a 1-0 advantage in the first inning. Jernigan scored again in the third after walking and advancing home on a ground ball out by right fielder Matt Diaz and second baseman Marshall McDougall singled and scored on a basehit by first baseman John Halliday to make it a 3-0 ballgame.

Florida State broke the game open in the fifth inning with a five-run rally. McDougall was hit by a pitch by Grant Dorn to lead off the inning, followed by three consecutive singles by Diaz, Halliday and Cash. Halliday and Cash each knocthed their second RBI of the game, and catcher Jeremiah Klosterman capped off the scoring by driving them home with a double to right field.

Mike Futrell ripped a pinch-hit single and scored on a basehit by Ryan Barthemely adding a run to FSU’s total in the sixth to make the score 9-1.

Diaz laced his third basehit of the game in the seventh to drive in Futrell who led off the inning with a walk and Barthemely ripped a two-run single to give the Seminoles a 12-1 advantage. The Seminoles recorded double-digit hits for the 17th time this season and double-digit runs for the 12th time this year. Florida State’s 18 hits are a season-high.
